How to turn a Word document into Markdown

  1. Choose your Word documentChoose one DOCX file for local conversion. Larger documents may need more memory and time.
  2. Review and editCompare the result with your original document. Complex layouts and merged tables are simplified; formulas appear as LaTeX notation.
  3. Take your Markdown with youCopy or download the edited Markdown. Choose the ZIP download to keep extracted images alongside document.md.

What carries over, and what may change

Headings, lists and simple tables can carry over to Markdown. Layouts and merged cells may change; formulas stay as LaTeX notation. Images are appended rather than kept in their original positions.

Remote images are not loaded in the preview. Copying or downloading only the Markdown keeps relative image paths; use the ZIP when you need the extracted images too.

Questions about Word to Markdown

How do I convert DOCX to Markdown?

Choose a DOCX file in LensUp. The converter reads it locally, then lets you edit and preview the Markdown. Copy the text, download an MD file, or save a ZIP containing the Markdown and extracted images.

Does my Word document leave my device?

No. DOCX conversion runs in your browser. LensUp does not upload the document, its text or its images to a server. There is no hosted conversion fallback.

Are images included in the Markdown?

Supported PNG, JPEG, GIF and WebP images are listed in an Embedded images section at the end. Their original placement is not preserved. Download the ZIP and keep its assets folder beside document.md. Unsupported images and embedded objects are not included.

Will tables, formulas and page layout look the same?

Simple tables, headings, lists and formula notation can be retained. Merged cells, text boxes and page layout may change. Formulas appear as LaTeX source rather than typeset equations. Always review the result before use.

Can I convert an old DOC file or a scanned document?

This tool accepts DOCX only. Save an old Word document as DOCX first. For a photo or screenshot, use Image to Markdown. Text inside scanned images is not recognized by this converter.
